Volunteer at the VA Hospital

For several years, the Anthony Halberstadt Chapter has volunteered every Thursday morning at the Fort Wayne VA Hospital, providing coffee and donuts to veterans receiving care. What began as a simple act of service has become one of the chapter’s most meaningful traditions. Veterans look forward to the visits, and the conversations that happen over a cup of coffee are unlike anything else the chapter does. Stories of service, sacrifice, and pride in country — shared freely by men and women who gave years of their lives so the rest of us could live freely.

Volunteers arrive at the VA Hospital on Thursday mornings and spend approximately two hours serving coffee and donuts to patients. No special training or equipment is required. Just show up, be present, and let the veterans know they are not forgotten. Compatriot Ron Kohart leads the effort and will walk any new volunteer through everything they need to know.

The Sons of the American Revolution was founded to honor those who secured American liberty. The veterans at the Fort Wayne VA Hospital are the living continuation of that tradition. Every Thursday is a chance to close the distance between the founding generation and our own — to say, in person, that their service is seen and that it matters.
